What Makes a Lock "High Security"? A Knoxville Locksmith Explains

Most people don't think much about their locks until something goes wrong—a break-in, a lost key, or a nervous feeling after hearing about a burglary down the street. But not every lock offers the same level of protection, and the deadbolt that came standard on your home or business may be easier to defeat than you'd like to believe. At Volunteer Lock & Key, we get a lot of questions from Knoxville homeowners and business owners about what actually separates a "high security" lock from a standard one. Here's what to look for.

Standard Locks vs. High Security Locks

Most residential and budget commercial locks are built for convenience first and security second. They’re inexpensive, widely available, and easy to install—but that also makes them easy to pick, bump, or drill for anyone with a little practice and the right tools. Keys can typically be duplicated at any hardware store or kiosk, which means you have little control over how many copies exist.

High security locks are engineered specifically to resist those attack methods. They’re built with hardened steel components, tighter tolerances, and mechanisms designed to defeat picking, bumping, and drilling attempts. Just as important, their keys are made from patented, restricted blanks that can only be cut by an authorized locksmith—so a key can’t quietly be copied without your knowledge.

What to Look for in a High Security Lock

A few features separate genuine high security hardware from a lock that simply calls itself “heavy duty”:

UL 437 rating. This is a certification from Underwriters Laboratories that tests a lock’s resistance to picking, drilling, prying, and other forced-entry methods. A UL 437-rated lock has been independently tested to withstand attacks that would defeat a standard cylinder in seconds.

Restricted, patented keyways. If anyone can walk into a hardware store and cut a copy of your key, you don’t have control over your own security. High security systems use keyways that are legally protected, so duplication requires proof of authorization.

Reinforced cylinders and anti-drill hardware. Look for hardened inserts and drill-resistant pins that stop a would-be intruder from simply drilling out the lock.

Pick and bump resistance. High security cylinders use complex pinning and sidebar mechanisms that make common bypass techniques far less effective than they are against standard pin-tumbler locks.

Who Actually Needs High Security Locks?

High security hardware isn’t just for banks and government buildings. It’s a smart investment for retail stores and offices holding cash, inventory, or sensitive records; landlords and property managers who need to control key duplication across units; homeowners in higher-traffic areas or those who simply want the strongest protection available for their family; and any business that has dealt with employee turnover, break-ins, or missing keys in the past. If you’ve ever wondered who might still have a copy of your key, that uncertainty alone is a good reason to upgrade.

Why We Recommend Medeco

Volunteer Lock & Key is an authorized Medeco dealer, one of the most respected names in high security locking systems. Medeco cylinders are UL 437 rated and built around patented key control technology, meaning duplication is restricted to authorized locksmiths only. For Knoxville homes and businesses that want proven, independently tested protection rather than a lock that merely looks tough, Medeco is a hardware line we trust and install regularly.

Pair High Security Locks with Key Control

High security hardware solves one half of the equation—stopping forced entry. The other half is knowing who holds a key in the first place. That’s why we often recommend pairing high security locks with a managed key control system, especially for commercial properties with employees, contractors, or multiple tenants. Together, they give you both a lock that’s hard to defeat and a key system you can actually track.
